Arizona's West Valley, K9 Snake avoidance training program.
Snake Wise offers expert dog training services designed to teach dogs of all breeds and ages to avoid snakes and to reduce the risk of being bitten. We use positive reinforcement techniques to encourage avoidance and e-collars to discourage interest in snakes.
We understand that every dog is unique. For this reason, we offer a one-on-one personal training session. Each session is tailored to fit the specific needs of you and your dog. Some pups catch on quickly, but if your pup needs a little extra help that’s okay too.
Snake Wise is a Christian Arizona-based company. We strive to honor God in how we do business. Our team is knowledgeable, passionate about helping dogs and their “pets”, and committed to providing excellent customer service throughout the training process.
Most of the learning occurs in this essential first step. In this initial training phase, we will lead your pup near a snake in a highly visible area. Most dogs are naturally curious and will often try to investigate. As they approach, we will provide a gentle correction using the e-collar to discourage them from continuing their advance and to maintain a safe distance. By permitting the dogs to approach the snake, we facilitate an immediate negative association with the snake. Once your dog consistently maintains a safe distance from the snake, they can advance to the next step of the training.
Once the sight of a snake creates avoidance behavior in your canine we will engage their sense of hearing. Using an inconspicuously placed speaker, we will play the sound of a rattlesnake. We want your dog to know what danger sounds like. If/when they approach, the trainer will use a gentle correction to teach the right associations. Much of the time this gentle signal is enough to deter your dog from further investigating the sound. Our goal is to enhance their awareness by teaching them what snake danger might sound like.
The trainer will continue to build on what your pup has learned so far in her training. A bigger snake will be introduced, but this time it will be placed out of sight. We will attempt to walk past the snake while observing the dog’s reaction. If the dog shows interest and attempts to approach, we will offer a gentle correction with the e-collar to correct the advance. This helps them understand that snakes represent danger.
If they instinctively backs away, avoids, or displays cautious behavior, we will immediately reward them for this behavior with a treat. This positive reinforcement helps your dog understand that avoiding snakes is the appropriate response.
By this point, we expect your dog to instinctively avoid a snake encounter. To confirm they have successfully received the snake training we will put them to the test. The final exam for your pup will happen as you are headed to your vehicle to leave. Our team will strategically place a snake and speaker in a place that piques your dog’s interest. At this time we expect them to avoid and evade the encounter altogether, proving that they understand the potential danger. Once they've aced his final exam, they will be praised and rewarded with a yummy treat to further enforce this desired behavior.
